In Latin, the word obscurus relates to the things that are hidden or not obvious. In European languages, everything that is strange, dark, unknown or of doubtful origin, has been labelled by the term ‚obscure‘. That is how David Lynch sees the world – as a place between a factory and a workers‘ housing estate, small, nameless, sick and lost. A place, where small details and torture exist, where people are fighting in the dark.
By referring to a similar sensitivity and impression of the reality, the exhibition takes a closer look at the aspects of terror and irrationality in modern art. ‚Obscure‘ is the common denominator for the fascination of mysticism, horror, paranormal issues, the tendency to watch brutal scenes, introversion, but also irony, distance and sort of a melancholy. The artists invited to this project reach for private issues or for subjectively avoiding a direct confrontation with global problems. References to the punk and gothic scenes or pop culture are no stranger to their work, while the game with genres and manipulating the audience are accompanied by experiments in the are of uncounsciousness.
